Common Questions

Yes. Dimensions, species, glass, hardware, and finish are all your choice on full custom doors. See /customize for the full list of options.
Functionality must be considered alongside aesthetics. A design may look great but not work properly as a door. Our team works with your dealer to ensure design and function are both achieved.
Consider sun exposure, desired color, and maintenance willingness. Stain grade shows natural wood grain and requires periodic refinishing. Paint grade (MDO, Extira, Tricoya, Accoya) provides a smoother painted surface with superior dimensional stability - better in harsh climates and direct sun exposure.
Full Custom is completely designed to your exact specifications with unlimited design freedom. The Semi-Custom Collection uses rail and stile construction with wide stiles and always includes a horizontal rail through the face. Semi-Custom is 20-30% less in cost.
Overhead doors operate with a standard garage door motor, offer more size flexibility, and cost less. Swing-out carriage doors give an authentic look with no visible track or hardware but have size limitations and higher cost. Most homeowners choose overhead; those who want the authentic carriage look choose swing-out.
No. Windows are completely optional. If you see a design you like without windows, simply specify that when ordering.
Usually yes, but your dealer should evaluate the opening first. Track and spring installation will likely be needed along with possible structural modifications to the rough opening.

Tricoya is an acetylated MDF panel engineered specifically for exterior paint grade applications. Made from Accoya chips, Tricoya undergoes the same acetylation process that makes it highly resistant to moisture, rot, and dimensional movement. Unlike standard MDF or Extira which can swell and fail in high-moisture environments, Tricoya maintains its stability in the most demanding conditions. It is the recommended choice for dark and black paint colors, full west-facing exposures, high-humidity climates, and coastal installations. Tricoya accepts paint exceptionally well with zero grain raise. It carries the manufacturer's extended material warranty - see tricoya.com for full terms. RHD offers a 5-year warranty on Tricoya doors versus 1 year on standard paint grade.
Smooth is standard at no additional charge. Upgrade textures include ReSawn, Wire Brush (light, medium, or heavy), Hand Hewn, and Distressed. For Vintage and Mountain Modern doors, As-Is natural aged texture is also available and is part of what makes those collections unique.
Stain Grade woods (Cedar, Mahogany, Hemlock, etc.) are built to showcase the natural grain and character of the wood. They are meant to be finished with a penetrating stain. Paint Grade materials (MDO, Extira, Tricoya) have a smoother surface designed for an opaque painted finish, and Paint Grade is recommended for dark colors, coastal environments, and west-facing applications where superior moisture resistance is needed.
A metal kick plate is a metal panel at the base of the garage door that provides a distinctive visual contrast between natural wood and dark metal. It is the signature design element of our Mountain Modern Collection and is available in small, medium, and large sizes with various panel configurations. If you see a door with a metal kick plate, it is a Mountain Modern design.
Accoya is a premium acetylated wood produced from sustainably sourced Radiata Pine. The acetylation process permanently alters the wood at a cellular level using acetic anhydride, making it highly resistant to rot, insects, and moisture without adding toxic chemicals. The modification goes through the full board thickness, not just the surface. Accoya offers exceptional dimensional stability, meaning it resists swelling and shrinking as humidity changes. It is an excellent choice for challenging climates, west-facing exposures, and coastal environments where standard wood species may struggle. Accoya is backed by a manufacturer warranty and is FSC certified.
