Wood Species & Finishes
Materials
31 itemsRHD Recommended
Species that Ranch House Doors specifies with confidence across the widest range of climates, applications, and architectural styles. These materials represent the best combination of proven field performance, finish compatibility, and long-term durability in our experience.
Western Red Cedar
Old-growth character with natural oils that resist rot and insects without treatment. Accepts stain beautifully across the full spectrum from light washes to rich dark tones. The benchmark species for coastal, high-humidity, and west-facing exposures. Light in weight and stable across seasons.
Details →
Accoya
Acetylated Radiata Pine modified through the full board thickness. The acetylation process alters the wood at a cellular level, permanently reducing moisture uptake. Highly resistant to rot, insects, and dimensional movement. Accepts paint and stain with exceptional uniformity. Backed by a 50-year material warranty from the manufacturer. FSC certified. Ideal for dark colors, coastal climates, and west-facing applications.
Details →
Vertical Grain Douglas Fir
Milled to expose tight, parallel grain lines with minimal character marks. One of the strongest softwoods available. Takes stain evenly and holds color well over time. A premium choice for modern and craftsman aesthetics where clean, linear grain is the design intent.
Details →
Tricoya
Acetylated MDF engineered for exterior paint-grade applications. Produced from Accoya chips, it undergoes the same acetylation process - highly resistant to moisture, rot, and dimensional movement. Zero grain raise means paint goes on smooth and stays smooth. Recommended for dark colors, west-facing exposures, and coastal installations. Backed by a 50-year material warranty from the manufacturer.
Details →Thermalized Products
Real wood baked at high heat in a sealed oven - it uses only heat and steam in the modification process, with no chemical preservatives added. The heat improves the wood's dimensional stability and its resistance to moisture, decay, and insects compared to untreated wood, and reduces routine maintenance. The color is built in during baking, so you choose your tone up front and it largely stays that way.
Pros
- Excellent dimensional stability - far less swelling, shrinking, and warping than untreated wood
- Improved resistance to moisture, decay, and insects
- Modified with heat and steam only - no chemical preservatives added
- Rich, even color straight through the board, so cut edges still match
Considerations
- Color is set by the heat process in a limited range of warm browns - stain and paint will not change it
- Needs a periodic clear oil finish to hold its tone; left unfinished it weathers to silver-gray
- Slightly more brittle than untreated wood, so panels call for careful handling
- Its warm, modern aesthetic is a defined look that fits some door styles better than others
Thermo Hemlock
Western Hemlock modified through a controlled heat and steam process that reduces moisture content at the cellular level. Improved dimensional stability compared to untreated hemlock. A lighter alternative to Thermo Ash with a warm, even tone. Takes stain well with minimal blotching.
Details →
Thermo Ash
White Ash heat-treated at high temperature using only steam - no chemicals added. The process drives out moisture and caramelizes the sugars in the wood, producing a deep chocolate-brown color throughout. Exceptional dimensional stability. Well suited for rich, dark stain applications.
Details →
Light Ash
White Ash heat-treated at moderate temperature. Warm honey-brown tone with the same stability benefits as Thermo Ash at a lighter color. Takes stain well and holds a neutral base for custom color work.
Details →
Ayous
Lightweight African hardwood with a warm cedar-brown tone and smooth, even grain. Excellent stain absorption with minimal blotching. Works well for painted and stain-grade applications. A stable, sustainable species used as an alternative to traditional softwoods.
Details →
Abodo
Sustainably grown plantation pine from New Zealand with vertical grain and a warm, honey tone. Modified for improved stability and moisture resistance. Accepts stain evenly with good color depth.
Details →Traditional Species
Natural wood species in their standard kiln-dried form. These materials offer the widest range of stain and finish options and the most familiar working properties. Proper sealing and periodic maintenance are required for exterior applications.
White Oak (Rift Sawn)
Rift sawn for a tight, linear grain with minimal ray fleck. Warm beige-to-tan base that accepts medium and dark stains well. One of the most stable oak cuts - less prone to cupping and twisting than flat sawn. A premium choice for contemporary and transitional designs.
Details →
Alaskan Yellow Cedar
A premium softwood with natural decay resistance rivaling tropical hardwoods. Fine, even grain with a pale yellow-white tone. Accepts stain well across the spectrum. Performs particularly well in cold and wet climates.
Details →
Select Tight Knot Cedar
Western Red Cedar milled to include tight, small knots for rustic character without the inconsistency of open or loose knots. Accepts stain similarly to clear cedar with more visual interest. The knots are stable and will not shrink or fall out. A natural choice for farmhouse, lodge, and mountain aesthetic designs.
Details →
Hemlock
Pale, fine-grained softwood with an even, consistent texture. Accepts stain with moderate absorption - works well for light to medium tones. A cost-effective choice for projects where budget is a priority without compromising on appearance.
Details →
Meranti
Southeast Asian hardwood with warm reddish-brown tones and consistent grain. Good stain acceptance with natural warmth that deepens richly with medium to dark tones.
Details →
African Mahogany
Premium tropical hardwood with rich reddish-brown color and a straight, ribbon-like grain. Excellent stain acceptance and depth of color. Naturally resistant to decay and insects. A classic choice for high-end traditional and Spanish colonial designs.
Details →
Ipe
Brazilian hardwood, one of the densest available. Highly resistant to rot, insects, and abrasion. Natural oils make stain penetration difficult - typically finished clear or with penetrating oil. Best where raw wood durability is the priority.
Details →
Black Walnut
Deep chocolate-brown heartwood with dramatic, irregular grain. Accepts stain but rarely needs it - the natural color is the design statement. Best used where the door is the focal point of the elevation.
Details →
White Birch
Pale, fine-grained hardwood with cream-to-white coloring. Takes paint exceptionally well with a smooth, even surface. Less common as a stain-grade option due to natural color variation. A distinctive choice for ultra-light or white aesthetic doors.
Details →Vintage & Aged Finishes
Species and finishes engineered to achieve a naturally aged, weathered, or vintage aesthetic. These are not antique woods - they are fresh lumber or chemically treated material designed to look time-worn from day one. Character is intentional, not incidental.
Nature Aged Fir
Douglas Fir chemically treated to achieve a silver-gray weathered patina. An authentic aged look without decades of exposure. The treatment is surface-deep - the underlying wood retains its structural integrity. Works best with clear or very light finishes to preserve the weathered character.
Details →
Big Sky Gray
Wood treated to achieve a consistent silver-gray, aged barn-wood tone. Pairs well with natural stone, raw steel, and black hardware. Suited for dry to moderate climates. Best finished with a UV-protective clear coat to maintain the gray tone.
Details →
Kentucky Bourbon
Warm amber-brown finish applied to a select wood base. A consistent, repeatable tone for projects requiring a specific warm-brown aesthetic. The color is factory-applied for uniformity across panels.
Details →
Accoya Grey
Acetylated wood with a natural silver-grey weathered finish. Carries the same dimensional stability and rot resistance as standard Accoya. The grey tone develops naturally through the acetylation process interacting with light - not a surface treatment. Backed by a 50-year material warranty from the manufacturer. Ideal for coastal and modern designs.
Details →Paint Grade Woods
Engineered and composite materials optimized for painted finishes with superior dimensional stability.
Extira / MDO Plywood
Engineered composite panel with a smooth, consistent surface for paint-grade applications. Resists moisture better than standard MDF in exterior settings. Accepts paint evenly with minimal grain raise. Recommended where consistent paint adhesion and surface uniformity are the priority.
Details →
Details →Plywood
Marine-grade plywood used for structural applications, overlay faces, and situations requiring consistent, knot-free material at scale. Not a solid wood product.
Marine Meranti
Exterior-grade plywood made from Meranti veneers, engineered for moisture resistance and structural consistency. Accepts stain and paint well. Used for overlay faces and applications requiring a stable, knot-free surface at scale. A structural plywood product, not solid wood.
Details →Wood Textures
Surface treatments that enhance grain character and add depth to the finished door.
Smooth
Factory-sanded to a fine, even surface. Lets the natural grain read clearly, and the standard finish for contemporary and formal looks.
Details →
Wire Brush Light
Light brushing that opens the grain for subtle linear texture. Adds depth to stain without much change to the door profile.
Details →
Wire Brush Medium
Medium brushing for pronounced grain relief and visible texture. Our most popular texture for farmhouse and mountain modern doors.
Details →
Wire Brush Heavy
Aggressive brushing for deep grain relief and rich stain variation. Maximum texture and character for rustic styles.
Details →
